Le département du Cantal est situé dans la région d'Auvergne, avec une économie principalement basée sur l'agriculture et le tourisme, et une démographie alarmante caractérisée par une très faible densité (25,97 Hab. / km²) et une population vieillissante, estimée en 2012 à 148 737 habitants, qui ne cesse de diminuer avec un taux de variation annuel de – 0,2 %. Les apports migratoires ne suffisent pas pour enrayer le dépeuplement, puisque, même avec un solde positif d’entrée et de sortie qui varie annuellement de 0,2 %, les naissances restent en deçà des besoins, puisqu’en 2011 on comptait 1 237 naissances pour 1 919 décès.
Le département du Cantal a une superficie de 5 726,00 Km², avec 3 arrondissements, 27 cantons et 260 communes, ses principales communes, de plus de 4 000 habitants sont Aurillac, Saint-Flour et Arpajon sur Cère.
Le taux d'activité des 15- 64 ans (2009) est de 72,7 % contre un taux de chômage de 7,5 %.
