La croissance démographique de la Sarthe est faible mais régulière, estimée à 0,6%, avec une part des plus de 60 ans de 23,9 % ce qui fait de la Sarthe un département vieillissant, mais appuyé par un solde naturel de 0,3 %, avec des naissances de 6 810 pour 5 187 décès.
